It took a trip to TV tropes to figure this out, but I finally know why Donald and Douglas swapped tenders in 'The Missing Coach'. 

"If one ever seemed to be outperforming the other, they'd switch tenders (the only places their numbers were painted) and do each other's work until their records evened out, so the boss couldn't make a decision."

UPDATE: I just spoke with :iconwildnorwester: and now things are even more confusing.

"One or the other would still get in trouble for messing up with the coach."

My next point is, Douglas probably made more mistakes prior to that incident, and this was likely the final straw.
